1818 is a mixed-use hospitality project located on Calle Loíza in San Juan, Puerto Rico, conceived as an intervention to an existing building that introduces a new architectural identity while remaining connected to its urban and cultural context. The project draws inspiration from the architectural language of Medellín, incorporating lush vegetation, expressive forms, and a strong relationship between architecture and nature. Its name becomes a defining element of the design, with the sequence “1818” abstracted and translated into the building’s facade through a rhythmic composition of forms and openings. The program brings together a collection of distinct hospitality experiences: Nara, an Arabic-inspired coffee shop and terrace on the ground level; hostel accommodations composed of individual pod-like rooms; and Maya, a Mayan-inspired cocktail bar located on the rooftop. Each programmatic component develops its own identity while remaining part of a cohesive architectural language. Materials such as wood, ceramic tile, glass blocks, and curved forms are layered throughout the project to create spaces that feel expressive, tactile, and highly personalized. Rather than treating each space as an isolated experience, the design establishes a dialogue between their different cultural references, allowing them to coexist within the same architectural framework. The result is a contemporary hospitality destination that transforms an existing structure into a layered and immersive environment, where architecture, vegetation, materiality, and cultural identity come together to create a distinctive experience along Calle Loíza.
