SON emerges from an exploration of duality and contrast between two of the most representative elements of the Puerto Rican landscape: the intense blue of the bodies of water surrounding the island and the lush green of the tropical vegetation that defines its territory. This dual condition becomes the conceptual starting point of the project, translating into both the spatial experience and the material and chromatic narrative of the interior.

The proposal organizes the space through two complementary atmospheres. The coffee bar, conceived as the setting for the daytime experience, embraces a palette dominated by vibrant blues. In contrast, the interior bar, designed for the cocktail bar’s nighttime experience, develops through a range of deep greens that evoke a sense of intimacy. This chromatic transition allows the space to evolve throughout the day, offering distinct experiences within a shared environment.

Every corner was conceived as an opportunity for discovery and surprise. The project is articulated through a careful layering of materials and textures, including ceramic tile, wood, quartz, terrazzo, velvet textiles, and concrete blocks. The combination of these elements seeks to enrich the user’s tactile and visual experience, creating a sequence of moments that continuously invite exploration of the space.

Through this project, our studio proposes a renewed vision for the design of hospitality spaces in Puerto Rico—one that embraces ornamentation as a tool for contemporary expression. Unexpected color contrasts, dramatic interplay between light and shadow, and the coexistence of robust materials with elements of great delicacy come together to create a rich and multisensory spatial narrative. This dialogue is particularly evident in the tectonic solidity of the concrete blocks, which contrasts with the softness of the fabrics enveloping the perimeter of the project, generating a visual tension that adds depth and complexity to the experience.

Color becomes an architectural element in its own right, extending beyond the walls to manifest across floors, ceilings, furniture, and work surfaces. Each plane actively participates in constructing the identity of the space, contributing to an immersive composition in which materiality and color are given the same level of importance as function.

Special attention was also given to elements that often go unnoticed by the user but are fundamental to creating a successful experience. The ambiance was carefully designed through an intelligent lighting control system capable of transforming the atmosphere according to the time of day and the desired experience. This is complemented by an audio system developed specifically around the dimensions and acoustic characteristics of the project, as well as the incorporation of a distinctive olfactory identity that reinforces the character of the space and contributes to creating a memorable experience.

The centerpiece of the project, known as the Island Bench, was designed and fabricated exclusively for SON. Beyond its function as a piece of furniture, it acts as a spatial organizer, defining different areas of occupation and establishing relationships between the project’s public zones. Integrated above it is a retractable curtain that transforms the perception of the space throughout the day. During the morning, it remains open, encouraging a bright, open, and social atmosphere. As night falls, the curtain is partially closed to create more intimate environments, evoking the secluded and welcoming experience of a contemporary speakeasy.
